Vigil India Movement is strongly grounded at the grassroots level through the vigil groups. There are about 1000 vigil groups (300 groups exclusively work on the rights of women). These groups are active in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Chatisgargh, Bihar, Utter Pradesh, Uttranchal, Haryana, Orissa, and West Bengal and in many other states in India.
VIM motivates and encourages the people to form vigil groups, which determine to promote human values among the communities with the following objectives. To create awareness among the marginalized community on human rights and human values.¤To strengthen the peoples’ movement to fight for their rights.
To address the local issues and to take active participation in local governance.
To nurture democratic values in the community.
The members of vigil groups identify likeminded individuals, ideally between 10 and 15 members and form vigil groups in rural and urban areas. The National Office in Bangalore coordinates the activities of the Vigil Groups and provides constant support to equip the groups through training programmes, seminars and consultation at all levels.
